Back from our travels

CIMG5529We’re back in Seattle from our travels.    The three weeks away went in a flash.   It was a great break all in all – the hike itself was wonderful, and something I wholly recommend.

We’ll do it again another year and pick a route with less road walking :-)  The time with spent with my family was priceless – we got to spent a few days prior and a long weekend at the end of our trip.  One thing that worked amazingly well (perhaps luck) was all the planned travel came through without a hitch – planes, trains and automobiles not a single problem.   I wish all my trips worked out that way.

For those who followed our blog as we hiked, thank you for all your comments.  It was very encouraging for us was we pushed our way across.

I’m told the SPOT map worked very well.   You’ll notice our track has dropped off as the backend SPOT web service appears to be dropping history records.  I’m working with SPOT support and hope we can get this track restored.

Our other GPS tracker (Wintec Easy Showily) crapped out early in our hike so we no longer have a detailed history of exactly where we travelled.  It seems there is a configuration corruption problem if you let the batteries run down.  Sigh – another good learning experience.

I’m pretty happy with the blog coverage we were able to provide during our crossing.  For the nerds among you, I was using an 2G iPhone with the fantastic offline WordPress editor for iPhone.  This allowed me to compose entries offline and then sync up when I was fortunate to get a cell signal (not very often).   I’ll have to compare this with emailing blog entries which is also possible.  I used a “pay and go” SIM from O2 which came with free data plan for 12 months.   Europe is far more progressive when it comes to cellualr plans.  Most people use pay and go plans and hence the carriers have to be very competitive.  AT&T wake up…

I’ve been sorting through our photos adding caption and keywords.  There’s still more to do but you can find an initial preview here.

I’ll be writing up a more detail journal of our adventure in the coming weeks along with our gear and food notes.  Alas, one thing we will miss will be our morning bacon butties… 🙁
