Day 2: A’Chuil Bothy Wildcamp to Glenmallie Wildcamp

Distance: 20km (1000m climbed) – total: 45km
Time on the trail: 12 1/2 hrs
Planned route: map

Today started by trying to dry out socks and other wet soggy stuff from our late night yomp. The weather cleared and we hit the trail with Alan and John intending to hit our planned Monroe. After climbing the ridge with Alan (John has headed in another direction) the winds were whipping up and the climb to the summit looked like a real scramble. Truth be told we were all feeling a bit knackered so we opted for our bailout route which took us down Glen Mallie. Our route better describes the route as ‘a wonderful lush green valley with easy tracks’. Well I think he must have confused it with somewhere else. Ever heard of Lake Baikal in Russia? It supposedly has 1/3 of the worlds fresh water supply. Well this Glen must be giving Baikal a run for it’s money as it was WET and involved over a dozen nasty river crossings. The three of us pushed on down the valley finally making a camp site with a dry spot around 8pm. Fortunately long enough to pitch tent and eat before the next squall arrived 🙁

The new Scarp-II held really well in the windstorm was super fast to pitch too!

Hi Nigel & Lynn! I tried to message you through Twitter, but not sure if you’ll get it. Just wanted to thank you both for walking with me on Friday and Saturday. Really helped to get me underway on Saturday morning and I appreciated the company! I made it safely into Glenfinnan around 3pm after a hard, wet slog (although it doesn’t sound as bad as your route to Glenmallie!). Was very kindly offered a lift to Fort William A&E by a local and had some x-rays taken. Looks like bad ligament damage and my arm was extremely painful by the time I got there, so unfortunately I took the decision to withdraw from the Challenge the following day 🙁 Such bad luck, but I think it was safest decision as I couldn’t even perform some basic tasks by myself! Will be applying for Challenge 2012 though so hopefully see you then! Will be following your progress on the blog/Social Hiking in the mean time 🙂
