Days 5&6: Ft Augustus, Garva Bridge and Kingussie
Thanks for the encouraging comments from folks following our trip. It really helps reading then at the end of a hard slog. Brett suggested getting a hip flask for a ‘wee dram’. You’ll be pleased to read we sorted this out before leaving Dornie – there were many nips taken in the hills!
Glad the SPOT is tracking well; the display on our ‘easy showily’ packed in so it’ll be the only way we get to see our actual route.
The weather for the last three days has been outstanding. Blue skies and sun; so much so that our arms and neck are pretty red – will be covering up. Our hands have a nice white lines across them from the straps on our hiking poles.
Dinner last night at the Lock Inn was great – Lynn has lasagna and I had steak pie both washed down with pints of ale and finished off with sticky toffee pudding. Yeah truly a great finish to the day.
Yesterday we yomped from Ft Augustus to Garva Bridge powered by a home cooked Scottish breakfast. We left Ft A. at 9am a little later than we’d have liked. The planned trail was another 27km on an old military road. These are anything from a narrow packed trail to a wide rocky double track.
Today was a brutal 30km hike from Garva Bridge to Kingussie – Lynn’s feet were giving her real trouble but she trooped on and we rolled into town around 6:30pm to the wonderful Silverfjord hotel. Walking up the street we were met by Jax 🙂
This past three days have been a certified "full on" marathon covering a staggering 90km! Thankfully tomorrow and the day after are a mere 18km
Tonight we have a nice hot shower and have the benefit of good grub and beer to sleep… nice!
baaaaa. look at all those sheep! no wonder it took you so long to cover those last 28 klicks. so glad you got some stellar sunny days in. i bet that lifted the spirits a ton. keep up the posts – awesome to see the updates.
Well, it’s pouring down in Seattle and clear blue skies in Scotland, can’t wait for your pictures to remind us how beautiful Scotland can be and that it doesn’t rain all the time! We’re very envious of your pub dinners and Scottish breakfasts. Hope you had a good belly full of black pudding and a nice floury bap to set you up for the day. D&P
